An advisor could specialize in almost anything, and most do have a particular area of competency. You just need to search for—and ask relevant questions around—what applies to your specific needs and interests.


Some common types of practice specialties are: • Professional: doctors, corporations, business owners, corporate executives, educators, employees in certain industries • Age-based: baby boomers, Generation X/Y • Retirees, pre-retirees • Income/asset level: ultra high net worth (investible assets > $5 million), high net worth (> $1 million), mass affluent ($100K - $1 million), mass market (<$100K) • Demographics: women, LGBTQ, minority, special needs kids, African-American, Indian-American, residents of a certain geographic area
